What is a heat pump?

A heat pump is a device that is similar to a central air conditioning unit. It has two basic functions, during colder periods, the heat pump moves heat from outdoors into your home. During warm periods, the function is reversed, warm air is pumped from the inside of the house and moved outdoors.

Essentially, a heat pump exists as an energy efficient way to heat a home. Instead of creating heat or cold air, a heat pump simply moves existing air.

A furnace creates heat and distributes air throughout the home. By absorbing energy from the air and ground, a heat pump reduces energy costs by eliminating fuel burning to heat or cool a home.

The different types of heats pumps

There are three types of heat pumps that are practical for residential use; air-to-air, water source and geothermal.

An air source pump is the most commonly used heat pump in the residential setting. Air source pumps transfer heat from outdoors to indoors and vice versa. The second type of heat pump, a water source pump transfers heat from a water source to your house. The third type of pump is a geothermal heat pump. These heat pumps pull heat from the ground and transfer it to your house. Water source and geothermal heat pumps are more expensive to install, but operate at a more efficient rate.
